Dental Braces
Dental Braces Leichhardt
Set your smile straight with braces in Leichhardt! Braces are wire-based appliances used to correct overcrowded and misaligned teeth, or bad bites.
Many people who need braces receive them during their early teens, but adults also can benefit from wearing braces.
Braces align your teeth and jaws to produce an even bite and pleasing smile.
For minor corrections, custom-made, removable dental appliances called clear aligners can be used. These have a more pleasing look, during treatment, to some adults.
Modern dental materials and technology make the experience of having dental braces much more comfortable than in the past.
Treatable Cases
Braces offer corrective treatments for:
- Overcrowded or crooked teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Overbite/overjet
- Underbite
- Jaw alignment problems that cause irregular bite
The teeth and jaws that are aligned properly may improve not only the look of your teeth but also the health of your mouth and the way you chew, bite and speak.
Benefits of Orthodontics
Visiting the dentist for check-ups can be very challenging for many of us. And for some, wearing braces can be a daunting experience.
Braces are meant for straightening your teeth and boosting your confidence and self-esteem.
They have several other benefits as well. Check out what they can do below:
- Preventing gum disease
- Preventing tooth decay
- Preventing cavities
- Helping with digestion
- Preventing dental-related injury
- Preventing bone erosion
- Boosting self-esteem
- Balancing facial proportions
Preparation for braces generally involves
Oral examination. Your Leichhardt dentist performs a complete examination of your teeth, jaws and mouth.
X-rays. A series of dental X-rays will be taken to determine the position of the teeth.
Plaster models. You’ll bite into a soft material, which stays over your teeth for a few minutes. From this impression, a model of your teeth is made out of plaster, and your Leichhardt dentist evaluates your bite. In some cases, this model may be scanned for further evaluation or treatment plans.
Potential tooth extraction. If there may be limited or no room in the jaw for all the teeth, your Leichhardt dentist may recommend extracting one or more teeth to allow room for the remaining teeth to fit properly. Doing so allows the teeth to fit together better and also allocates adequate space for efficient cleaning.
Other procedures. In more severe cases, in which tooth movement alone will not correct a bite, jaw repositioning surgery is required in combination with orthodontics.
After your Leichhardt dentist has evaluated your teeth and jaws, a treatment plan will be custom-made for you. This most often includes the use of braces, which are temporarily bonded to your teeth.
How Braces Move Teeth
Dental braces gradually move your teeth by applying constant pressure on them for an extended period of time.
We tend to think our teeth are connected to the jawbone, making it harder to consider how they can be moved to the ideal position. But under your gums is a membrane surrounded by bones, that attaches teeth to the jaw. This membrane controls the location of your teeth, and it adjusts to the pressure put on your teeth by braces.
