Dental Implants Leichhardt

Dental implants aim to restore missing teeth so you can achieve a complete, healthy smile.

A dental implant integrates with the jawbone to hold and support a dental prosthesis such as crowns, bridges, dentures, or facial prosthesis.

They help you to live the way you want and confidently eat, smile, talk, and enjoy all of your daily activities without worrying about your teeth.

This procedure has been used for a very long time since the mid-1960s for they permanently replace missing teeth and look like your natural teeth.

Components of Dental Implants

Check out each component and their functions in the dental implant procedure.

Body. The body of the dental implant is made from titanium, a biocompatible material. It is used for dental implants since it is lightweight and extraordinarily durable.

This implant is placed into the area where the tooth is missing during a short surgical process. It’s open cylindrical and resembles a screw.

Abutment. It is usually made of porcelain, gold, or titanium. The abutment is connected with the implant with a screw and cut so that it resembles a look for the crown to fit on top of it.

Crown. This is the part of a dental implant that looks like a tooth. The crown is attached onto the abutment.

Types of Dental Implants

There are 3 types of dental implants: EndostealSubperiosteal and Zygomatic dental implants.

Z Endosteal implants

These are the most common types of dental implants since they are suitable for most patients, but they require sufficient healthy jawbone for the post to fuse to. A placeholder post is shaped like a screw. It is placed into the jawbone that the false teeth are fitted on.

When the procedure is finished, the healing period may take a week or two. It requires time to fuse together and create a strong hold.

Once fully healed, the crown can be placed on the post to fit in with the surrounding teeth.

However, you don’t like the idea that something is inserted on your jawbone, you might like the second type of implant a little more.

Z Subperiosteal implants

This type of dental implant rests on top of the bone but still under the gum, unlike the endosteal implants that are fixed into the jawbone.

This procedure is suitable for patients who don’t have sufficient jawbone for an implant to be placed or those who have a history of intensive oral surgery to add bone to the area.

Z Zygomatic implants

This implant is placed into the patient’s cheekbone. It is the least common type among the rest of the dental implants, and this is the most complicated procedure and should be done only if you don’t have enough jawbone for endosteal dental implants.

The Dental Implant Procedure

In placing a dental implant, a small incision is made in the gum to access the bone — preparation with the use of special drills. The implant is placed onto the jawbone. The gum is stitched over afterwards. This allows the implant to fuse to the bone undisturbed.

The second phase of the treatment is usually started after 4 to 6 months, where if necessary, the dental implant is exposed and healing caps or temporary gum forming restorations attached.

Following healing within 2-4 weeks, final impressions are made, and the final prosthetic replacements attached.

Regular visits at 4-6-week intervals during healing period are needed to review and keep track on the healing, and also once the final restorations have been fitted, every 3 months.
