Crowns and bridges are solutions for missing and damaged teeth. This procedure uses prosthetic devices to return your smile and appearance.

A crown is used when the tooth structure is damaged or fractured while the bridge is used when one or more teeth are damaged or missing.

Crowns

Dental crowns are artificial teeth used to replace missing tooth structure. They are usually made of porcelain material that can be colour and texture-matched to your existing teeth.

They fit like a cap and are cemented into the prepared tooth.

Reasons your tooth may need a crown include:

Dental trauma resulting in a broken tooth
Cosmetic imperfections
Tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
Tooth weakened due to decay, clenching or grinding

Bridges

Dental bridges are crowns connected together; they may be used when a person has one or multiple missing teeth.

They are used to close the gap and replace the missing teeth to prevent problems from having a gap, hence the name.

Bridges are attached to the natural teeth or dental implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth serve as anchors that hold the bridge in place.

A replacement tooth (pontic) is placed to the crowns that cap the abutments.

Crown and Bridge Making Procedure

Crowns and bridges must be made and moulded for each person and each tooth.Crown fabrication usually requires two appointments with your dentist.

On the first visit, the existing tooth is prepared, moulds and impressions are taken, and a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth.

On your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and replaced by your permanent dental crown. The permanent crown is fitted and secured into place, providing a long-lasting, natural-looking aesthetic solution.

Dental crowns can be made from different kinds of materials. Your Leichhardt dentist will discuss which material will best suit your situation.

Creating Bridges

On your first visit, the abutment teeth are shaped by removing a portion of enamel and dentin to make room for the crown. Impressions of your teeth are then created.

Your Leichhardt dentist will place a temporary bridge while your bridge is made in a dental laboratory.

On your second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed, and the new permanent bridge will be adjusted to achieve the perfect fit.

If the bridge is fixed, your Leichhardt dentist may attach it in place for a few days, making sure it perfectly fitted. When the final fit is achieved, the bridge is permanently bonded in place.
