Oral Hygiene Leichhardt

Oral hygiene – preventing plaque build-up for excellent oral health.

Practising good oral hygiene can help prevent a wide range of dental problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, and teeth erosion.

Brushing every morning and night is an excellent start, with perhaps a bit more commitment needed for really good oral hygiene.

Here are oral hygiene tips that will keep your pearly whites in top condition.

Brushing

Brushing is an essential part of oral hygiene – you need to brush your teeth at least twice or thrice a day, at least once after breakfast and before bedtime. You have to spend at least two minutes, brushing your teeth and make sure that you brush them clean and reach all areas of the teeth.

  • Make sure that your toothbrush is angled 45-degrees against the gums.
  • Gently move your toothbrush in short, circular strokes.
  • Don’t forget to brush the outer, inner, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Brush the insides of the teeth with a gentle up and downstroke using the tip of your toothbrush.
  • DO NOT forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Flossing

Brushing alone can’t reach the bacteria in the hard-to-reach areas between your teeth and under the gumline. That’s why daily flossing is essential.

  • Use 18 inches of floss and wind it around the middle fingers of each hand. Secure the floss between your thumbs and index fingers.
  • Work your way with the floss between your teeth with a gentle rubbing motion.
  • When the floss reaches the gumline, form it into a C shape against the tooth. Gently glide it between the tooth and gums.
  • Slide the floss back and move it up and down the other side, following the shape of the tooth.
  • Gently rub the sides of the tooth, working the floss away from the gum.
  • Repeat this on the rest of your teeth.

Other Oral Health Care Tips

Along with daily brushing and flossing to promote oral health, consider using a mouthwash containing fluoride. Fluoride strengthens your teeth, leaving them resistant to harmful acids from oral bacteria.

Also, fight the temptation to use toothpicks or other tools that could injure your gums and allow bacteria to thrive. If you smoke, try quitting. Using tobacco products increases your chances of acquiring many oral problems, including periodontal disease and tooth loss.

Cracking nuts, opening packages, or even uncapping bottles with your teeth leaves them at high risk of chipping or breaking. Remember, do not use your teeth outside their normal uses.
