Oral Surgery
Oral Surgery Leichhardt
Oral surgery is the diagnosis and therapy of the diseases and injuries of the mouth, jaw, and surrounding structures.
The following conditions may require oral surgery:
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth become familiar to people when they reach their late teens or early twenties.
They are called wisdom teeth because they come out at the age you supposedly have more wisdom.
There are cases where these teeth erupt from the gum line, and the jaw is large enough for them, but not for all.
Reasons for Extracting the Wisdom Teeth
A lot of people suffer from wisdom tooth problems. Wisdom teeth may grow partially or entirely.
Impacted wisdom teeth must be removed.
Wisdom tooth is pulled because of the following reasons:
- Impacted growth
- Growth in the wrong position
- Gum infection
- Tooth trapped within the bones

Tooth Loss
Dental implants are titanium screw-like posts that fuse with the jawbone or skull to support and hold dental replacements such as crowns, bridges, dentures, facial prostheses.
Qualified candidates for dental implants need to have enough healthy bone, must not be at risk with infection and must be willing to keep good oral hygiene habits.
Jaw Problems
Unequal jaw growth
There are cases when the upper and lower jaws don’t grow properly, which can cause problems with speaking, eating, and breathing.
Serious jaw problems may need oral surgery to remove parts of the lower and/or upper jaw, to create more balanced, functional, and healthy jaws.
Improve denture fit
Oral surgery is done to correct irregularities of the jaws before making the dentures. This ensures a good fit; it can also help long-term denture wearers.
The surrounding bones often wear down over time, resulting in a denture that no longer fits properly.
Temporomandibular joint disorders
Temporomandibular joint disorders take place when there are issues with your face and jaw muscles. This is the result of excessive clenching of your jaws or grinding of your teeth.
TMJ disorders can cause pain in the face, neck and back and dizziness.
Other Conditions Treated by Oral Surgery
- Facial injury
- Lesion removal and biopsy
- Cleft lip and cleft palate
- Facial infection
- Snoring
- Sleep apnoea
After Surgery Care
On the surgery day, fresh and soft foods, such as applesauce, cottage cheese, or yogurt, are recommended. Hot foods may disrupt clot formation.
The next day, avoid crunchy foods such as popcorn and nuts since they break into little pieces and can get into the extraction site.
If you had dental implant surgery, avoid chewing on hard foods for at least six weeks, or the healing of the implant will be compromised.
